Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο ΑβδήρωνA small town on the coast, about 25 km from Xanthi. Its rich history dates back to antiquity. The picturesque port, just a few kilometers from the village, is used by recreation craft and many amateur fishermen. The new coastal settlement of Avdera is extremely busy,Παραλία Αβδήρωνparticularly during the summer months. You will find small bays (Ai Giannis, Porto Molo) sheltered from the wind, where you can enjoy the clear blue waters. The area offers opportunities for recreation, tours and research (it is the birthplace of the great philosophers: Democritus, Protagoras, Lefkippos, Anaxarchos etc). You can also visit the Museum of Avdera, which is a modern building that houses the findings from the excavations in Ancient Avdera, as well as the Folk Art Museum (tel. 51259), a beautiful building from the early 19th century. There are also several attractive mansions with their own distinctive character.

EVENTS

At the port of Avdera, on Clean Monday (Monday of Lent), there is a kite-flying competition, and festivities with traditional music.

During the last ten days in July, the “Democriteia” cultural festivities take place, which last for 5 days. This is a well-known festival that offers a broad range of artistic and culinary events, such as visual arts exhibitions, theatrical performances and sports meetings. It is also an opportunity for visitors to sample delicious local food and the traditional homemade bread, meticulously prepared and baked by the local women.
